Cotter Town Hall

Normally one has to choose between living in town and keeping a horse in the back yard. However, there are very small towns where that isn’t true. Cotter is one of them.

This two bedroom cottage was listed for sale September 20th, 2010.

Cotter House

The property consists of two and one half lots. The extra lots contain a very nicely fenced area that’s equipped for horses.

Horse Lot

Asking price? Just over $69,000. (Yes, I know some of you folks in California couldn’t buy a garage for that, but in Cotter you can get a two car garage with heated shop, a cottage, and a horse lot. There are advantages to small town life.)

Cotter has a singular claim to fame. It is the only town in the United States that has only one entrance. Because it sits off the highway on the other side of a railroad track, the main street dead-ends.

Cotter Street

P.S. I hear that the October issue of Louisa’s hiStory (due out October 15) will contain an article about Cotter’s village blacksmith and his family of nine kids. Get your copy at the museum or the State Bank of Wapello.
