Meet the Dickcissel July 3, 2010

Dickcissels are loud, brassy little birds. They’re not shy and that makes them fairly easy to photograph. Hear are three pictures I took of a one that likes to sing by the road southwest of Wapello.

They look like small Meadowlarks. Note that they lift their heads to sing.

Their song is so loud and distinctive that, since I learned it, I’ve even heard identifiable portions while zipping by at 55 mph with my truck windows down.
