The Port Louisa National Wildlife Refuge invited county officials and local residents out to meet Kathy Henry, the new manager of the refuge. I took the opportunity to get better acquainted with her and her staff.

Henry says her biggest priority will be maintaining the refuge for the birds and animals that live there. Unlike the national parks, our nation’s wildlife refuges are intended to protect wildlife by protecting essential habitat. Large portions of the Port Louisa Refuge are intended to provide rest stops and dining for migratory birds flying the Mississippi corridor.

That said, there is already a fresh breeze blowing at the refuge. Henry and her staff have plans that may make the refuge more visible to the general public. New signage, some new educational programs, and a new “Friends of Port Louisa” group are in the works along with some new research projects.

I look forward to seeing what they cook up. From my perspective, it’s good to encourage greater understanding of God’s creation and the needs of the living things that share this world.
