Racers Entering Wapello

Each May, on the Friday before Memorial Day, up to 400 bicyclists converge on the Louisa County courthouse in Wapello. The courthouse serves as the turning point for the 80 mile Burlinigton Road Race and as the starting point for a shorter race that runs from Wapello to Burlington.

The racers for the Wapello to Burlington run begin gathering about 4:30. Some arrive alone. Often teams or whole clubs will travel together. Dressed in brightly colored spandex, they pedal back and forth between the courthouse and park to warm up.

About 5:30, they line up like brightly colored dominoes behind a police motorcycle that will lead them. Soon, the racers from Burlington flash past the courthouse, loop back to second street, then race back across the bridge on their way to Burlington. The motorcycle pulls out and the shorter race begins.

The road race opens the Snake Alley Criterium. Racing continues in the area through Memorial Day.
