A Bird in the Hand Is Easier to See May 22, 2010

Posted by Wapello Warbler in Birds, Nature.

As ATowee wrote in his blog Prothonotary Warblers, like this little guy, are breath-taking little birds. They’re fairly common, but very particular about were they live. They are the only eastern warbler that nests in tree cavities and like to pick trees that are hanging over sluggish or stagnant water. In other words, portions of the Port Louisa Refuge are very much to their liking.

I got the chance to see my first Prothonotary this morning during a bird banding demonstration at the refuge. The little guy took it all pretty well, though his feathers got a bit ruffled in the net.

Here’s another view of him just before he took off for home.
