5 Strengths of Wapello High School September 14, 2009

My youngest child recently started high school here in Wapello.  He is the fifth of my children to attend the school.   Here, in alphabetical order, are some of the programs that have impressed me over the last ten years.

  1. Chorus The high school chorus was a little weak when we first arrived.  However it has made steady progress under its last two directors.  Each year the singing is better and each year the songs are a bit more difficult.  It’s worth attending their concerts even if you haven’t got a student in the chorus.
  2. FFA Our Ag teacher recruits the brightest kids in the school and motivates them to excel.  Almost every year one of the Wapello teams takes the state championship in one of the Career Development Events. My children and their teammates have competed nationally in nursery landscaping, flora-culture, and food science.  We’ve had teams place in the top ten nationally more than once.  In the last few years two of the students have returned to our community to start their own  businesses and more are working in related fields elsewhere in the state.
  3. Mock Trial Mock trial is part drama, part courtroom procedure.  Our teams are the ones to beat in this part of Iowa and usually advance to the state competitions.  Unlike football and basketball we have to beat  larger schools on the way.  The kids involved learn how to speak and how to think on their feet.  Some have even gone on to successful legal careers.
  4. Sciences The sciences often suffer in smaller schools. Yet, Wapello’s student body consistently scores above average on standardized science tests.  Our science teachers accomplish that without AP classes or the latest lab equipment.
  5. Speech In the last ten years Wapello has become a powerhouse in competitive speech.  We send disproportionately large numbers of students to the district speech contests.  Almost all of them advance to the state (really regional) competitions and each year about one in five are invited to the All-State festival.  That honor requires a best in category performance.

Is there anything you would like to add?

As a graduate of Wapello High School I was very interested in reading this. I am sad that our band no longer ranks as a strength, but I guess things change …. Thanks for sharing your thoughts

Although the band is quite small this year, I heard this morning that they played well last night.
