The 2009 Louisa County Fair is coming up fast. The fair proper begins Monday, July 27 and runs through Saturday, August 1 at the fairgrounds on the east edge of Columbus Junction. Read on to find out about some of the special events that will be part of this year’s fair.

New Parade and Fun Night

The fun will begin a little earlier than usual this year, because the city of Columbus Junction is adding a brand-new, pre-fair parade and fun night to the festivities, Saturday, July 25th.

The parade will begin at 4:00 pm at the United Methodist Church, head down the hill and through downtown, then east to the fire station. If you want to be part of the parade, report to the church at 3:00 for registration and line up.

After the parade, the folks from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church will be serving supper at the fair grounds. Afterward, grab a root beer float at the 4-H Foundation Booth. There will be bounce houses for the kids ($5 wristband for admittance), a dunk tank, and a petting zoo sponsored by the L&M FFA chapter. At dusk, they’ll show a family movie. If you have kids, you’ll want to be there.

Habitat for Humanity Fund Raiser

There will be other opportunities for good food at the fair itself. Louisa County Habitat for Humanity has announced that they will serve mouth-watering pork chop sandwiches and dinners Tuesday, July 28 from 4:00 pm to 6:30 pm near the 4-H Variety Building. Tyson Fresh Foods is providing the pork for this event. Come and support their efforts to help lower income families build, low-cost, well-constructed homes in Louisa County.

Sumo Wrestling

Another new item on the schedule is sumo wrestling. The Wapello Warbler has heard that Tuesday evening employees of several of the county’s banks will be competing for the honor of their institutions. Do you suppose they stuff the suits with money? 😉

Wicki-up

Learn more about Native American Lifestyles by visiting the Louisa County Fair Expo Hall between 9:00 and 4:00, Tuesday through Saturday. There will be a wicki-up lodge to play in as well as lots of fun crafts, activities, puppet shows and prizes!

And More

Of course the fair will also feature 4-H judging and a variety of contests during the days. There will be races, tractor pulls, and dances in the evenings. For the official schedule of fair events click here.

I hope to see you at the fair.
