You loved 5 Spring Reasons to Leave the City.  Now that it’s summer, let’s have another go with these summer reasons to leave the city.

  1. Escape the  smog.  We don’t have  the thermal inversions or the eight lane parking lots that make cities susceptible to smog.
  2. Escape the heat. City temperatures are up to 10 degrees higher than in the countryside.  Find a good shade tree or forested park and outdoor temperatures can drop another five or ten degrees.  Get out of the house and enjoy the summer.
  3. Have an outdoor adventure. Come try the high ropes course at Camp Langwood. If walking a wire 3o ft. off the ground doesn’t get your blood pumping, nothing will. For younger folks, our county conservation department offers a variety of day camps that encourage kids to explore the outdoors. Or come make your own adventure in one of our county parks or nature preserves.
  4. Get out on the water. Boating, fishing, and swimming are all popular in Louisa County.  Every summer people pull huge catfish and trophy bass out of the rivers.  There’s easy access to the Iowa for canoes and fishing boats.  Larger craft run up and down the Mississippi from Toolesboro and Oakville.
  5. Community festivals and county fairs. This is the season for small town festivals and fairs of all sorts. Each is a little bit different.

Next up will be Chief Wapello Days. We are very excited about the PRCA rodeo that will be part of this year’s celebration.

Two weeks later, all eyes will turn to Columbus Junction for the Louisa County Fair, July 27–August 1. This year’s fair will begin with a parade through downtown Columbus Junction. 4-H judging and a variety of contests during the days. Races, tractor pulls, and dances in the evenings.
