Social Networking–Wapello Style May 10, 2009

Once or twice a week, I stop by the grocery store for breakfast.  While Facebook is popular among the younger set, those over 50 still do social networking the old fashioned way–face to face over coffee.  Usually there are half-a-dozen or so at the tables.  Who’s there varies from day to day.  We share the overnight news, tease one another, and solve the problems of the world.

When we run out of news there are always stories.  Stories about the way things used to be.  Stories about adventures in far off places.   Yesterday, the stories were about life without plumbing and electricity.  WR reports that during the winter his childhood bedroom doubled as a meat cooler.  His dad used to hang smoked ham and sausages from the ceiling along one wall.  Shades of Harry Potter’s cupboard!  No wonder WR keeps an extra refrigerator in his garage.
