Honey Hole

You’ve undoubtedly heard of white-tablecloth restaurants. Maybe you’ve even eaten at one or two. Have you ever eaten at a camo-tablecloth restaurant?

We have one in Wapello. It’s called The Honey Hole.

The name comes from local slang for a fishing spot where you always catch your limit. That’s appropriate, because The Honey Hole is a combination bait shop and restaurant.

I first went there with my daughter and her then boyfriend. He was from the Washington DC area and had never been to a town as small as Wapello. He had certainly never eaten in a bait shop.

He enjoyed his breakfast.

So did I. In fact, this little restaurant is the best place around here to go for breakfast. Lunch is good, too. The day I wrote this, the special was mini-catfish fillets, baked beans and cornbread. Bill keeps the fish tanks covered so there are no funny smells and DiAnna loves to cook.

My favorite breakfast is something called a “Mess.” DiAnna takes hash browns, scrambled eggs, onions, and green peppers and cooks them all up together. Then she tops it off with some cheese. According to local tradition, the Mess was invented up the road at the now defunct Grandview Cafe. It has been a local favorite for decades and my personal favorite since I moved here.

The Honey Hole is also the place to stop if you’re coming to take advantage of Louisa county’s great hunting and fishing opportunities. You can pick up your license and get advice and directions from Bill.

Oh, I should probably point out that I haven’t been compensated in any way for saying nice things about these folks.

Stop in for breakfast or lunch. You’ll be glad you did.

DiAnna says the mess was invented at an Ainsworth restaurant.

Thanks for adding your comment, DiAnna. ‘Tis truly a gift from God to have work you love.

@Connie: Interesting. I wonder how many other places claim it.
